Set up SEO on every site.

Each WordPress site gets an SEO tab: search titles and descriptions, social sharing tags, schema, what search engines should skip, robots.txt, redirections and your local business details. You can also bring your settings over from another SEO plugin.

WordPress sites only. It is off for each site until you enable it.

Sensible defaults, without another suite to learn.

Set a title and description template and see a search preview before you save. New sites start with stronger defaults, and the plugin prints the tags on the site.

  • Title and description templates with a search preview
  • Open Graph and Twitter tags for sharing
  • Stronger defaults for new sites, and a choice of what to hide from search and the sitemap
  • Canonical links, schema, breadcrumbs and a choice on WordPress's XML sitemap
  • Verification codes, a checked robots.txt editor, llms.txt and IndexNow
  • Overrides for any single post or page, with a content checklist that shows Good or Needs work
  • Redirections with exact, prefix and regex rules and hit counts, plus an optional 404 log
  • Automatic redirects when a page or post gets a new address
  • Import your settings from Yoast, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress or Slim SEO
  • A Local SEO section for business details, hours and a map location, for up to 50 locations

The details

How it works, point by point.

Titles and descriptions

  • Build the page title from a template using %title%, %sitename%, %tagline% and %sep%
  • Set a description, and check how a result will look in the search preview
  • Any post or page can have its own title and description instead
  • Each content type can have its own title and description template, with an %excerpt% token. It falls back to the site-wide template

Social sharing

  • Open Graph and Twitter tags are printed on the site, so links look right when shared
  • A page can have its own social image

Defaults for new sites

  • Attachment, tag and single-author pages are hidden from search and the sitemap
  • A placeholder tagline is ignored, so it does not end up in your titles
  • Paginated lists get "Page N" in the title and their own canonical link
  • The social image falls back to the site icon
  • Schema, breadcrumbs, image alt text and the RSS footer are on

What search engines see

  • Search, author and date pages can be hidden from search results with noindex
  • Hide whole taxonomies or content types from search and the sitemap
  • A canonical link is printed on each page
  • You can turn off WordPress's built-in XML sitemap
  • Any page can be marked hidden from search on its own

Verification codes

  • Add site verification codes for Google, Bing, Yandex, Baidu and Pinterest

robots.txt, llms.txt and IndexNow

  • Edit robots.txt in the dashboard. It is checked before it is saved
  • llms.txt can be off, automatic or custom
  • IndexNow can tell supporting search engines when your content changes

Schema and breadcrumbs

  • Site and article schema, with your website plus either an organization or a person
  • Breadcrumbs can be added with a shortcode
  • Local business details are covered below

Optional URL and archive settings

  • All of these are opt-in and off by default
  • Strip the category base: category addresses lose the /category/ part, with a before and after example shown and 301s from the old addresses. A short address that clashes with a page keeps its old URL
  • Disable author archives: keep them, redirect them to the home page with a 301, or show not found. The users sitemap is dropped

Links, images and feeds

  • Open external links in a new tab, or mark them nofollow
  • Automatic image alt text for images that have none
  • Optionally fill image title attributes from the media library title or the file name. Alt text is what matters most
  • Add a footer to your RSS feed

Per-page overrides

  • The tab lists your published posts and pages, 20 at a time, with search
  • Per page you can set a title, a description, a social image and whether to hide it from search
  • Clearing a value removes the override
  • The page list shows each page's content status

Content checklist

  • Open a page's Edit dialog and look under SEO. You can add an optional focus keyword
  • The checklist covers the focus keyword in the title, description length, subheadings, links to your own pages, links to other sites (optional), image alt text and readability
  • Checks that need a keyword are skipped until you set one
  • The status is only Good or Needs work, with no number
  • It is guidance for writing, not a promise about how a page will rank

Redirections

  • Add rules that match a path exactly, by prefix or with a regular expression
  • Choose the status code: 301, 302, 307, 308, 410 (gone) or 451 (unavailable for legal reasons)
  • See how many times each rule has been hit
  • Import and export your rules as CSV

Automatic redirects

  • Off by default. Turn it on under SEO, Redirects, Automatic redirects
  • When published content gets a new address, through a slug or parent change or a renamed category or tag, the old address gets a 301 to the new one
  • Rules are kept free of chains and loops
  • For deleted or trashed content you choose: do nothing (the default), return 410, or redirect to a fallback address
  • Restoring content from the trash removes its rule
  • Automatic rules are marked, and you can filter the list to see them
  • When a category or tag with children gets a new address, one prefix rule keeps all of its children's old addresses working
  • Deleted categories and tags follow the same delete setting as content: do nothing, 410, or redirect to a fallback address
  • The children of a deleted category or tag move up a level, and each gets a 301 (first level only, up to 50)

404 log

  • A 404 log has its own view in the SEO tab, between Redirects and Import
  • It is optional and off until you turn it on
  • Use it to find broken URLs that are worth redirecting

Import from other SEO plugins

  • Bring over settings from Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress or Slim SEO
  • You see a preview first, and the import only adds, so nothing you already set is overwritten
  • After you confirm, you can optionally deactivate the old plugin
  • Slim SEO redirections are not imported

Local SEO

  • Enter your business details, opening hours, map location and links to your profiles
  • Add up to 50 locations on a site, each with its own details, hours and profile links
  • Tie a location to a published page and that page carries its LocalBusiness schema
  • Locations with no page are marked up on the home page

Plays well with other SEO plugins

  • If Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress, Slim SEO or The SEO Framework is active, KontrolWP prints nothing and the tab says so
  • WordPress's own Discourage search engines setting is shown, but KontrolWP never changes it
  • Turning SEO off, or removing the plugin, leaves pages exactly as WordPress renders them
