Catch accessibility problems on every site.

Each site gets an Accessibility tab with a score out of 100, issues ranked by impact, and a history of past scans. WordPress sites also get six one-click fixes.

WordPress and static sites. The one-click fixes are for WordPress and need KontrolWP Connect 0.14.0.

A first pass, run every day.

KontrolWP reads each page's HTML and reports what the markup alone can show.

  • A score out of 100, with its history, so you can see whether a site is improving
  • Issues ranked by impact, with the pages, the elements and the WCAG criterion
  • A scan every day, or whenever you press Scan now
  • On WordPress: Fix now, Fix all or Turn off for six fixes

The details

How it works, point by point.

What it checks

  • Missing alt text, form field labels, link and button names, and frame titles
  • Page title and language, heading structure, a main landmark and a skip link
  • A viewport that blocks zooming, positive tabindex, timed refreshes, autoplay and vague link text
  • It scans the home page and a few same-site pages it links to

What it cannot check

  • Color contrast, because that depends on styles and layout
  • Keyboard use, and anything that depends on scripts
  • Whether alt text is actually good. It can only tell whether alt text is missing
  • The tab says so, because this is a useful first pass and not a full WCAG review

The score and history

  • The score is 100 minus a penalty for each kind of problem, weighted by its impact and how often it occurs
  • Each issue lists the WCAG 2.1 criterion it relates to
  • The score of your last 90 scans is kept, so you can see the trend
  • Scan now runs a scan immediately, at most once every 30 seconds

The six fixes (WordPress)

  • Add empty alt text to images that have none, name form fields from their placeholders, and give icon-only links (social, email, phone) a name
  • Add titles to iframes, allow zooming in the viewport tag, and add a skip link to the main content
  • Switch each with Fix now or Turn off, or press Fix all
  • Fixes rewrite the finished HTML of pages visitors see. They never touch your content, database or theme, so turning one off restores the page
  • They apply only to public pages, not to the admin, feeds or REST requests, and a page is sent unchanged if anything goes wrong

Good to know

  • A page cache may keep serving old HTML, so a scan can still show a problem after its fix is on. The tab says so.
  • Scans are spread out so a small host is never loaded: pages are read one at a time with a pause, and scans stop at the first server error.
  • Turn accessibility checks off for one site in its settings, and scheduled scans skip it.
